Exterior

The idea here is to keep the exterior as stock as possible while cleaning up and smoothing small elements
7/15/10 Prepping for paint, removing what i can to make things easier, from what I can tell there is only one layer of red and one layer of primer, which is good, i'm surprised to find the factory blue isn't under there as well. I am still up in the air as to color I would like to spray it, but am still leaning toward a blue of some sorts. I do like windveil blue, on newer Mustangs, it has a bit of color changing to it, looks great in full sun, very metallic light blue, and in less sun seems an almost gray blue. It's hard to find pictures on the internet, it seems to be one of those colors that doesn't photograph well, my Sonic Blue lightning was like that. Email me if you have any other suggestions for colors.

5/30/09 Here are some shots from when i got the car out a while back and could finally get more than a couple feet away to look at it. It's coming along!

3/29/09 Finally have the car back on the ground to sort out the front end setup, thought this was a cool shot of the rear with the new exhaust and wheels/tires on.

3/2/09 I have gotten a couple questions about the hinges on the front end, I realize I didn't explain things very well and the pictures are pretty far away, hopefully the picture below will aid a little. All the parts are trimmed from the stock hinges save for the thick walled 1" round stock. It's attached to the stock bonnet bracing and some extra tabs were welded in to provide some additional support.

10/7/08 Working on the bumperless concept, let me know what you think. Bodywork is not my specialty but I am learning, I've started to fill in the gaps in the bumper. The fan and radiator are sitting in their respective places but not mounted yet. The new hood hinges are made from parts of the old hinges turned upside down plus some round stock. I am not 100% sure about the aesthetics, maybe it's just lack of paint, but the functionality is right on. With the hinges inboard the hood opens a lot lower but does miss the bumper.

09/14/08 I have been looking at the car and thinking of what I want to do costmetically. The number one thing I am thinking is going bumperless. I removed the rear bumpers and I like the look a lot. Those of you with Mark II Gt6's should know there's not a lot of protection with the rears, inside there are some pretty heavy duty brackets that don't really attach to anything except the rear of the bumper, and the side of the bumper simply bolts thru the body. So I'll be filling in the bolt holes on the rear which should be straightforward. Up front things are going to get more complicated. I don't really like the look of keeping the stock hood pivots and loosing the bumper, not smooth enough for me, so I guess I'll be fabricating new pivots to keep them inside the grill opening. Also I was thinking of welding or brazing the lines around the front headlights to smooth out the bonnet(see the second picture down), like I need other things to do.

Took a few minutes to clean up the car and take some pics.

Upon decoding the trim code of the car, I found out the car was originally Valencia blue. I have found the color throughout the interior and on the frame under the chassis black it currently wears. Truthfully I am not a fan of this color at all but I would like to take the car back to some form of blue, red Triumphs are too common for me. I am currently thinking of Windveil Blue (see picture for example) with a ghosted single stripe down the middle of the car, approximately the width of the power bulge on the hood. I am not sure what I am doing with badges, I don't want to eliminate them all but some are less than appealing in my book. The side reflectors are going to be shaved and some holes filled, for example, the holes in the picture above on the lower front bumpers. The stock chome work is in good shape so it will be retained, I think it will look good beside the paint and wheels I have in mind.
